Pruning of Young TreesThis workshop was held in 2013. Dr. Ed Gilman, University of Florida, is known world-wide for his research on pruning. He is the author of the book “An Illustrated Guide to Pruning”, now in its 3rd edition. Discussions were held on the branch-to-trunk aspect ratio, structural pruning of young trees and management of tree roots at the time of planting. |
Sidewalks and TreesThis workshop was held in 2011 and co-sponsored by the Pacific NorthWest chapter of ISA. The main speaker was Gordon Mann, a former community forest manager now working as a consultant. Discussions were held on the nature of conflicts between sidewalks and tree roots and methods to mitigate the problems. |

Up By RootsThis workshop was held in 2010 and co-sponsored by the Pacific NorthWest chapter of ISA. The main speaker was James Urban, a renowned USA landscape architect and author of a 2008 book “Up By Roots: Healthy Soils and Trees in the Built Environment”. The morning included an indoor lecture leading to an afternoon field portion with stations on soil compaction, soil profile, soil texture and root management. |
Biological Control of Greenhouse DiseasesThis workshop was held in 2008 and co-sponsored by the Certified Organic Growers Association of British Columbia (COABC). Seven university researchers and extension specialists shared the latest information on the topic and application methods for new commercial products. |
The Science of Compost and MulchesA workshop held in 2004 and co-sponsored by the 6th Canadian Urban Forest Conference. The main speaker was Dr. Harry Hoitink, from Ohio State University, a leading world researcher on the topic. Workshop hand-out #1, hand-out #2 and flyer: page 1, page 2. |
